During the week of Dec. 12-18, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
During the week of Dec. 12-18, Hawaii Island police arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona, 11; and Puna, four.
So far this year, there have been 1,066 DUI arrests compared with 1,036 during the same period last year, an increase of 2.9 percent.
There have been 1,374 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,494 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.
So far this year, there have been 31 official traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 17 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 82.4 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
